Kat’cina Mosa 100K: A Day in the Backcountry
This year, the Utah County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (UCARES) once again had the privilege of supporting the Kat’cina Mosa 100K, a challenging ultra-marathon that winds through the rugged and scenic backcountry of Utah. This race, known for its breathtaking views and extreme difficulty, brings with it unique challenges—one of the most significant being the lack of cell service across much of the course. That’s where we come in.
Why Our Support Matters
The Kat’cina Mosa 100K is a test of endurance for both runners and our operators. As participants push their limits, UCARES volunteers ensure that essential communications are maintained throughout the race. Our operators stationed at various aid stations meticulously record the progress of runners as they pass through, relaying this information back to the start line via radio. This continuous communication loop allows race organizers to track runners' progress and provides peace of mind to participants' families by keeping them informed of their loved ones' whereabouts.
The Day’s Challenges
This year’s race began in the still-dark hours of 3:00 AM, with our operators already in position, ready to keep the lines of communication open. Throughout the day, we faced the ongoing challenge of operating in an environment with no cellular coverage. Despite this, our team worked seamlessly, ensuring that every runner's progress was noted and reported.
The race, spanning from the early morning hours until its conclusion at 11:30 PM, tested the endurance of not only the runners but also our operators. Yet, with determination and expertise, UCARES volunteers successfully provided the crucial communications link that this remote race depends on.
A Job Well Done
As the last runner crossed the finish line, our team knew that we had once again fulfilled a vital role in the success of the Kat’cina Mosa 100K. We are proud of our involvement in this event and the difference it makes in ensuring the safety and smooth operation of this demanding race.
UCARES continues to stand ready to support such events, utilizing our skills and equipment to provide essential communications in areas where others cannot. Thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time and expertise to make this year's race a success!
